In 1991 an operating system Linux was introduced by Linus Torvalds. Like all other operating systems it manages the computer programs, or applications, by allowing them to connect to the hardware devices inside the computer . The difference between ordinary operating systems and Linux is that linux is a free or open source software, while most other operating systems are commercial interest based . In the sense that users can run, copy, distribute or even improve it, Linux is free .
Linux is now widely taken up both in personal and commercial purposes . Its use varies from mobile phones to desktop/laptop computers to mainframes and supercomputers . Linux is used as server operating system . While it is used for running firewalls and news servers, it is also run as a web server by a lot of companies .
Since the year 2010 out of the top 500 supercomputers 459 benefit from Linux distributions . The range of Linux run products includes wrist watches, embedded systems like Android smart phones, video games, stage lighting systems, portable music players like mp3s, tablet computers etc. In real time applications and computer architecture support too, Linux is found useful .
Linux users get utmost freedom which makes it prevalent in the market.
