In 1991 an operating system Linux was introduced by Linus Torvalds. Like all other operating systems it manages the computer programs, or applications, by allowing them to connect to the hardware devices inside the computer . Being a free or open source software is the distinct quality of Linux unlike other commercial operating systems. Linux is free for the users as they can run, copy, distribute or even improve it .
Both individual and commercial users are now having Linux distributions. A variety of its applications comprises of desktop/laptop computers to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is used as server operating system . Many companies run it as a web server, while it’s useful also for running firewalls and news servers .
Since the year 2010 out of the top 500 supercomputers 459 benefit from Linux distributions . The range of Linux run products includes wrist watches, embedded systems like Android smart phones, video games, stage lighting systems, portable music players like mp3s, tablet computers etc. In real time applications and computer architecture support too, Linux is found useful .
Linux users get utmost freedom which makes it prevalent in the market.
The article that I used to write this is "Uses of Linux | LiveJournal."
